WILLYAMS (Rev. Cooper).
An Account of the Campaign in the West Indies in the year 1794, under command of their excellencies Lieutenant General Sir Charles Grey, K.B., and Vice Admiral Sir John Jervis, K.B. Commanders in Chief in the West Indies; With the Reduction of the Islands

Rev. Cooper Willyams (1762-1816) was educated at King’s Canterbury and Cambridge before taking up a career in the Church, which began with his appointment as curate to a Gloucestershire parish in 1784. His rise in the Church was steady, however, in November 1793 he joined the expedition to the West Indies under the command of Lieut.-General Sir Charles Grey and Vice-Admiral Sir John Jervis as Chaplain on board the Boyne.

The campaign was hindered by a severe outbreak of Yellow Fever, from which Willyams himself suffered, indeed he was the only chaplain to survive. On the surrender of the French forces at Guadeloupe, Willyams was appointed chaplain to the island, a post which was unfortunately never sanctioned by the Church authorities in England.
