An Address: Issued by Caln Quarterly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, held 28th of 1st mo., 1847, to members and others.

Moses Whitson was a conductor on the Underground Railroad, who, in response to his activism, faced a number of barn-burning threats from neighbours in Chester County. Deborah Coates is famous for her abolition-themed quilts which were sold to raise funds for the movement.

Here they publish a strident denunciation of slavery: “The system of American Slavery being one of unmitigated injustice and cruelty, fraught with untold evil to both master and slave, we feel called upon as believers in a principle of justice and love which cannot be violated with impunity, thus publicly to address and entreat you, to unite in concern for the immediate and unconditional overthrow of this system on iniquity; and inasmuch as one man has no right to hold another in slavery under any circumstances, immediate emancipation is the right of the slave and the duty of the master.”
