Although rather an unprepossessing production this is an important work describing as it does Werne’s second journey, printed in German as Felzug nach Taka. According to the translator the book is to be commended on three counts: firstly it describes a region previously unexplored; secondly the author is himself an “officer in such an army as we can hardly realise in these days of high civilisation”; and thirdly Werne had time whilst in camp to make careful ethnographic notes on the people he encountered.
