In her career, Hayashi published six novels and numerous short stories. The present book is a collection of eight short stories written by Hayashi in the 1930s, shortly before WWII. Following the success of her first novel, Horoki [Diary of a Vagabond] in 1930, Hayashi was propelled out of poverty and into the literary limelight. An autobiographical work, Horoki delved into Hayashi’s troubling childhood and continuing struggles through abject poverty, which are themes present in her proceeding works. Hayashi is also known for her feminism, and contributed to the feminist journal Nyonin Geijutsu. Her writing on love and relationships sensitively captures the nuances of women in Japanese society and in the domestic space.
