24 albumen prints, laid down on strong cardboard, incl. an 8part panorama of Shanghai. Small oblong folio (measuring 32x23.5cm). Contemporary half-calf, minor wear. Some damage to lower margin of front free endpaper, some foxing/staining and occasional fading, but overall still in very good condition. The majority of prints are dark-toned. This album opens with a photo of the second incarnation of the Shanghai Customs House which was built in a Neo-Gothic style at the behest of Sir Robert Hart (Inspector-General of the Chinese Imperial Customs Service, 1835-1911), with a five-story rectangular clock tower in the centre, and two three-story wings on either side. This is followed by the 8-part panorama of the Shanghai Bund as well as a number of street scenes in Shanghai, Canton, the Great Wall and Peking. Also includes portraits of Chinese ladies, opium smokers, and two convicts wearing the cangue.
