The author cites witnessing a slave auction as the prime motivation for this overview of slavery in the United States. He examines the political dimensions and include a chapter on the Kansas-Nebraska Affair and the Missouri Compromise. In the final pages the author foreshadows the Civil War that broke out just four years later.
