Published during the time of the suppression of the Jesuits in Wester Europe. In 1762, the year of the work’s publication, the Parlement français ruled against the Jesuits in an important bankruptcy case involving the Jesuit priest and missionary Antoine Lavalette (1708-67). As a result of the case, many Jesuit holdings in France were seized to offset Lavalette’s debts.
