Having served as ship’s surgeon on the first Grinnell Expedition, Kane actively promoted and commanded the second. Leaving in 1853 on the Advance, the party were trapped in the ice for 22 months. Running low on provisions, Kane struck a tentative trading arrangement with the Etah Inuit, who allowed some of the men to accompany them on hunting trips. Having lost two men to complications from frostbite, a party of the nine strongest survivors trekked south in a bid for rescue. The bid failed and the nine men were returned to the ship by the Inuit in frail condition. In May 1855, after five months of preparation, the party made a successful 800-mile trek to Upernavik Greenland.
