McLure and MacDonald Co, Glasgow.
Big Class cutters, Meteor II and an unidentified other.
A fine pair of yacht portraits, unusual for their size. The first photograph, of Kaiser Wilhelm’s Meteor II (evidenced by the Prussian Eagle burgee) has remains of titling on the mount at foot, which refers to the Queens Cup, 1896, at the Royal Northern Yacht Club on the Clyde: the second portrait is as yet unidentified. Britannia was beaten by Meteor II in this, Meteor’s first season, but she normally flew a burgee incorporating the Prince of Wales’ feathers.
The unidentified photograph has some early damage from the original mounting - the lines of staining across the image. Meteor II is in better order, with a little bubbling from its early mounting on board.
