MAWSON (Douglas).
British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition. Report ... The Work of the Expedition in R.S.S. "Discovery" During the Season 1929-1930.
The BANZARE, 1929-1931 was conducted over consecutive summers in a bid to establish the boundaries of the Australian Antarctic Territory.
Mawson’s report commences with the departure of the discovery from Capetown on 19 October 1929, sailing first via Kerguelen Island toward Enderby Land. Proclamation Island was named on 13 January, 1930, and an Australian flag duly raised. There are additional notes on deep sea soundings and natural history specimens collected.
They met both a Norwegian exploring vessel and a South African whaler on the expedition. Mawson concludes a fairly historic voyage by stating that their discovery of a whaling ground off Enderby Land was alone “worth far more than all the cost of our exploring expedition.”
The map shows the tracks of the expedition.
