£1,000.00

Very good, some toning visible, particularly around the floral border.

Mary Gertrude Bennett [1911 - 2002] studied at the Gloucester School of Art in the 1920’s and later the Stroud School of Art. She worked in a variety of media and her embroidery appeared in an exhibition at the Royal Academy, and she also worked for a time at the animation studio Anson Dyer. Mary Bennett was a well-loved figure in Stroud, where she continued to teach illustration and embroidery until late in life. The text of this illuminated manuscript is taken from William Morris’ Earthly Paradise, and indeed the flourishing floral border evokes exactly that.
