THORNTON (John).
A Chart of the Coast of Barbaria with the Western, Canaria, & C. de Verd, Isles. [London: Mount & Page, ca. 1730]
This chart was originally prepared for John Thornton’s English Pilot. The Third Book, a pilot guide with charts describing the sea-route round Africa to the East Indies and Far East, the first volume of its kind published anywhere in Europe.
This chart depicts the coast from central Portugal to just south of Cape Verde, and includes the Azores, Madeira, Canary and Cape Verde Island groups, with more detailed insets giving a fuller picture of Madeira and Tenerife.
The chart marks the shipwreck ‘Josyna of Flushing Lost Anno 1697’, against a rock to the south of the Azores.
