One of the best photo-books of China published in the 20th century. The images were collected from a wide variety of sources. Many of them are credited to Sidney D. Gamble (1890-1968), the famous sociologist and China expert, who was the grandson of the founder of Procter & Gamble. Others are by Fritz Henle (1909-1993), a German professional photographer who had studied under Helmut Gernsheim and emigrated to the U.S. Both Henle and the author Fung collected images from other photographers, most of them Chinese (incl. Pun Leuk Loo, Man Li Hung, Thomas Kwang, Wing Yeu Young).
