ORWELL (George).

A Clergyman's Daughter.

First edition. 8vo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in green. London, Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1935.

£1,750.00

Orwell’s second novel, and the rarest of his books in first edition.

A good copy only, early ownership inscription of ‘M. Hill’ in blue ink to front free endpaper, small patch of faint marking to blank fore margins of pp. 16-17, contents otherwise generally clean, cloth rather rubbed and marked, heavy lean to text block, minor chipping to tips of spine, corners bumped.

From the library of Orwell scholar and former UCL deputy librarian Ian Angus, with his neat pencilled ownership inscription and pencilled quotation to the front free endpaper. Angus was the co-editor of Orwell’s Collected Journalism, Essays and Letters published in 1968 and also later contributed to editing the enormous 20-volume edition of Orwell’s Complete Works published 1997-8.
