Each volume is warmly inscribed by the author to the director Lindsay Anderson, who after a chance encounter, read Wesker’s first play Chicken Soup with Barley in manuscript and encouraged him with the redolent phrase “you really are a playwright aren’t you?” and asked if he could send it to the Royal Court. Wesker described the relationship, in his memoir As Much as I Dare as “one of confident upper-class scholar-artist and hesitant East End Jewish autodidact-artist.” Excellent copies, preserved in a black cloth-backed box.
