The American philosopher Max Black was a leading in analytic philosophy in the years after World War II. He read mathematics at the University of Cambridge, where he attended the classes of G. E. Moore, Frank Plumpton Ramsey, and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Black’s abiding interest in Wittgenstein “culminated in A Companion to Wittgenstein’s Tractatus, a work some six times as long as the text it analysed; it was posthumously reprinted, and admired - even imitated - for its astute and engaging combination of exegesis, explication of sources, and critical comment” (Macmillan Encyclopedia of Philosophy).
