Born in Marseilles in 1891, Philip Argenti studied at Oxford before going on to do law in Athens. He served in various Greek embassies as a diplomat, but his great interest and abiding passion was the island of Chios. He left behind not only several published works on the island’s history, including the volume described above, but also a library of over 10,000 volumes, as well as a fine collection of paintings. He died in London in 1974.
