BRONTE (Rev. Patrick)

The Cottage in the Wood,

or the Art of Becoming Rich & Happy. Reprinted by Permission, from the Second edition of 1818. Third edition. Slim 8vo., original pale green printed wrappers. Bradford, Published by Abraham Holroyd, top of Westgate; and Michael Nelson, XXX Market Street, 1859.

£350.00

With contemporary gift inscriptions, apparently to and by Lucy Lund, born 1850, sister of the future publisher Percy Lund. The wrapper is dated 1860. Evidently as uncommon as the first two editions. Patrick famously outlived his three daughters, to die in 1861. The advertisements on the inner wrappers for Piano-Fortes, Harmoniums, cabinet making, and General Dying and Finishing illustrate the prosperity brought to some by the Industrial Revolution. The publisher’s own list includes the current text under a variant title subtitle of “A Tale founded on Facts”, as well as noting that “The following by the Bronte Sisters, always kept on sale.”
