BULL (Henryk Johan).
Cruise of the "Antarctic" to the South Polar Regions.
IN THE ATTRACTIVE CLOTH BINDING
The book describes a commercial cruise in the Ross Sea for both whales and seal. During the voyage a landfall was made at Cape Adare, this is the first recorded landing on the mainland of the continent. The vainglorious Borchgrevink was a last minute addition to the crew. Illustrations are provided by W.G. Burn Murdoch.
The original trade binding, one of the most attractive of those which grace Antarctic literature from the heroic age, depicts the Antarctic blind silhouetted before elaborately silvered ice cliffs. This book was bound up in batches as and when sufficient orders for it were received, the binding was quite expensive so batches were probably small. Where there are adverts, not in every case, the date of issue can be ascertained by the date of the final 32pp. In this copy the leaves are dated February 1896, some copies are found with dates as late as 1908.
