An excellent copy of this rare account of the Arctic.

Under the command of Capt. G.E. Tyson, the Florence spent the winter of 1877-8 near Baffin Island collecting supplies to equip a scientific expedition to Lady Franklin Bay the following year, with the ultimate plan of establishing a colony there. The expedition wintered in the Cumberland Sound region of Baffin Island and the text gives a daily account of their activities.

Maggs handled this same copy in 2006. We’ve had no other in the last 35 years. Auction records list just four copies between 1905 and 1969 and none since. This copy has the Beekman Pool bookplate on the rear wrapper.
