HOCHI SHIMBUNSHA.
Dai 1-kai Hochi Shimbunsha Kensho: Snappu Kokoku Shashin-shu. [The First Competition of Hochi Newspaper Snap Advertising Photographs].
Hochi Newspaper was founded in 1872, and it was forced to merge with Yomiuri News in 1942. In 1934 it sponsored a competition for adverising photography specifically asking for snapshots rather than studio photographs. The present publication is devided into three categories, namely ‘highest prize’ (tokusen), ‘honourable mention’ (kasaku), and ‘selection’ (jinsen). A superb example of modernist advertising photography featuring soap, soya-sauce, sweets, tabi, and sake. The first prize went to Ogawa Shinichi, followed by Tanahashi Yukichi and Daimon Hachiro.
