MORRIS (May)
Decorative Needlework.

Veryt good, spine slightly faded, covers very slightly rubbed and bumped at corners, internally bright and clean. An unusually attractive copy of this delightful book.

May Morris’ manual of embroidery beautifully bound in a stamped cloth of her own design. Morris dedicated the book ‘to those who, without much previous knowledge of the art of embroidery, have a love for it and a wish to devote a little time and patience to its practice’. Writing in the introduction, she outlines an argument true to the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement: ‘work done at the demand of fashion or caprice and that done inevitably, that is, for its own sake, are as widely dissimilar as can be: the first being discarded in a month or so as ridiculous and out of date, and the other remaining with us in all its dignity of beauty and fitness, to be guarded as long as may be against the unavoidable wear and tear of time’.
