MARIANO (da Siena).
Del viaggio in Terra Santa fatto e descritto da Ser Mariano da Siena nel secolo XV.
Fifteenth century pilgrimage diary
The pilgrimage diary of Mariano, a priest of Siena, who made his third trip to the Holy Land in 1431.
He and his two companions sailed from Venice on April 25th and were at sea for 46 days, landing at Jaffa on May 25th. They stayed in Jerusalem for only a short period, making visits to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and other pilgrimage sites. Departing on June 7th, they took 35 days to re-cross the Mediterranean.
Given the weighting of time spent at sea, the diary contains much on the two voyages, with interesting passages on their stopping-off points. The voyage out contains a description of Modon (Methoni), which was, at the time, an important point on the trade route between Venice and the Holy Lands.
