Third edition. 8vo., original red cloth lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. Uncut. London, Elkin Mathews, 1913.
A very good copy, with the bookplate (by Evelyn Waugh) and neat ownership inscription of “Alec R. Waugh The House Sherborne May 1915.” Two years later, the publication of Waugh’s first book, which described his time at Sherborne was to become successful and scandalous for its reference to homosexuality in school life. Waugh’s third wife Virginia Sorenson probably did not have this book (with its printed dedication to Adelaide Fontinowicz as “Missie”) in mind when she wrote her children’s book Curious Missy.
