This volume contains a collection of critical and moral dissertations on memory and imagination, on dreaming, the theory of language, on fable and romance, on the attachments of kindred, and illustrations on sublimity. The contents is proceded by a dedication to George Gordon, Marquis and Earl of Huntly wherein Beattie described the volume as “…useful to Young Persons” (p. v).
Provenance: 1. James Paterson 1800 / John Paterson 1802“ on the title and “John Paterson … 1802 Price One pound Sterling in Boards” on the verso. 2. Signature in ink on the title-page “Alexr. Irvine”, probably Alexander Irvine (1754-1849), 18th Laird of Drum Castle, Aberdeenshire, and the owner responsible for deleting one of the earlier inscriptions.
