A lovely example of Texas oil ephemera, an illustrated brochure soliciting investment in East Texas oil operations over some 958 acres in Henderson County.
Printed on both sides, the recto illustrates the drill and derrick (“one of the finest built derricks in the State of Texas”) as well as those involved, including Ralph Dudley, Mr. Hodges, “Jimmie” Kimbrough and other oil men, as well as local farmers from the East Texas village of Chandler, just west of Tyler. The brochure states that all the men depicted here could attest that the Ben Grewe well drilled in 1921 actually produced a flow of oil at around 1700 feet.
While oil was only discovered in Texas until 1894 at Corsicana, this opportunity is laid out in stark terms: “This is probably the last opportunity to join Mr. Hodges in what promises to be one of the greatest profit-paying enterprises in oil history … Don’t let the opportunity pass, and remember, there’s no time like - TODAY.”
