Signed and inscribed by Spender with an elaborate semi-calligraphic vertical inscription referring to the rather mannered typographical decoration throughout the book: “Hugh with love from Stephen, May 12 1949. The way of writing seems to ask for this way of writing. Woodbury Connecticut USA.” The recipient is the American artist Hugh Chisholm who had found them a house in Portofino later that summer. An excellent copy.
