John Rawls, in his magnum opus, The Theory of Justice, said he owed much to this work, while Meade’s economic philosophy was said to have been influenced by Rawls. David Reisman, in his biography of Meade, wrote “Both Meade and Rawls saw in the other’s philosophy a powerful confirmation that equality is an efficient tool for raising utility” (Reisman, pp. 36).

Meade was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics in 1977 ‘for his work on international trade as represented by the two volumes of his Theory of International Economic Policy (1951, 1955), which together have become the bible of every trade economist’ (Blaug).
