ROYLE (Charles)
The Egyptian Campaigns 1882 to 1885.
Mostly devoted to the events in the Sudan, which had dominated since the first edition of 1886.
“It has been the object of the author to make the work in its present form a complete narrative of the rise and fall of the Arabist and Mahdist movements, as well as a history of England’s intervention in Egypt, this last a subject on which many persons entertain somewhat vague and indistinct ideas.” (From the preface).
Royle is described on the title page as “Late of the Royal Navy, Barrister-at-Law, Judge of the Egyptian Court of Appeal”, but he was also one of the founders, along with Moberly Bell of the Times, of the Egyptian Gazette.
Loosely inserted are two 19th century CDVs, one reproducing an illustration of a “Birds Eye View of the Battle of Tel El Kebir” and the other of members of the Highland Brigade posing around the Great Sphynx of Giza.
