NAGATA (Gigen).
Eigo tsuben jizai: Shoyo futsu / English and Japanese names of Letters

A very compact phrase book printed in the Meiji period.

Across the 32 sections of this book, readers are introduced to a wide range of ‘modern conversations’ including the topics of breakfast, sailing the different seasons and much more. Each phrase is written in English and Japanese, with katakana script to help read the English text phonetically. As well as the phrases themselves – “I have a determination of blood to the head” (p.20) – it is amusing to read the mistakes in spelling and grammar across the book. Guides such as these were made increasingly popular towards the beginning of the twentieth century, as Japanese people came to interact more with foreign visitors.

Extremely rare. Only one copy in OCLC (NDL Tokyo).
