The most complete exposition of Hegel’s philosophical system, the Encyclopaedia of the Philosophical Sciences was principally written for use as lectures notes while professor of philosophy at Heildelberg (1816-1818). “Hegel is, of course, famous for his dialectical method, but it is enormously difficult to explain this in a brief compass. It should first be noted that Hegel set out his systematic writings in dialectical triads comprising a thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. Thus, he divided his Encyclopaedia, in which he expounded his system as a whole, into three fundamental division sections ‘Logic’ [a revision of his Science of Logic], ‘Philosophy of Nature’ and ‘Philosophy of Mind’” (Encyclopaedia of Philosophy III, p. 436). Each of these three sections is then further divided into three, resulting in an encyclopaedic structure for his entire system. Revised editions followed in 1827 and 1830.
