An essay by Orwell on the post-war English populace. Commissioned by W.J. Turner for the Britain in Pictures series, Orwell described the work as “a piece of propaganda for the British Council”.
Provenance: From the library of Orwell scholar and former UCL deputy librarian Ian Angus, with his neat pencilled ownership and extensive manuscript notes to the front free endpaper. Angus was the co-editor of Orwell’s Collected Journalism, Essays and Letters published in 1968 and also later contributed to editing the enormous 20-volume edition of Orwell’s Complete Works published 1997-8.
An excellent copy, partial offsetting to endpapers as usual, jacket slightly rubbed at tips of spine and corners, spine and rear panel slightly browned.
