José Maria Dantas Pereira (1772-1836) was a councillor of the Portuguese Admiralty, and commander of the Guardas-Marinhas. He was also a phenomenal virtuoso mathematician, and whilst still completing his naval training at the Academia Real das Ciéncias de Lisbon, he was appointed a professor of mathematics, and also asked to tutor the Infante D. Pedro Carlos. He left for Brazil around 1807, and by 1817 was commander of the fleet.
