MITCHINSON (Alexander, William).
The Expiring Continent: A Narrative of Travel in Senegambia.
The Brooke-Hitching Copy
The author relates his travels on the West Coast of Africa, specifically dealing with routes between, and then up, the Senegal River and the Gambia River. In lively and opinionated prose he details the culture and society of the native people and touches upon a number of contentious subjects, such as the struggle between Islam and Christianity for predominance among the natives and the abolition of slavery and its effects.
This is a fine copy from the library of Franklin Brooke-Hitching (his pencil mark to top left of the front free-endpaper), who put together one of the finest private collections of English language books relating to voyages, exploration and discovery.
