A presentation copy, inscribed by the author ‘To Bob Clark with Highest Esteem Joe Spengler Jan 4, 1979’ in blue ink to the front free endpaper. The recipient, the economist Robert L. Clark, was a colleague of Spengler’s at Duke University with whom he collaborated on several journal articles and co-authored the book Economics of Individual and Population Aging (1980).

An important work by the distinguished American demographer and historian of economic thought Joseph J. Spengler (1902-1991), the culmination of his extensive research on the economics of zero population growth undertaken since the 1930s. ‘A volume that is outstanding in scholarship and coverage. Drawing on his unrivalled knowledge of the literature, he presents not only a summary history of theoretical speculation but also a detailed survey of the demographic and economic problems facing countries experiencing a cessation of population growth’ (contemporary review by Brinley Thomas in Economica).
