An attractively bound book with many woodcut-style illustrations depicting 48 classic stories. Part of a limited edition of 200, this volume is signed on the half-title page by British artist Rex Whistler and includes popular tales such as ‘The Little Match Girl,’ ‘The Little Mermaid,’ ‘The Red Shoes,’ ‘The Ugly Duckling,’ and ‘Thumbelina’ among others.
The gilt cover contains small figures from the stories, enhancing its whimsical nature. Inside are matching decorative endpapers, including a place for an ownership inscription that has been filled by former owner, Miranda Villiers, in blue ink, below which are traces of other erased pencil inscriptions. The text is clean and tight, with slight staining and minor pencil marks to a few pages. Bottom corner of text has a slight water stain that does not extend into the pages.
Overall, a very good copy of this charmingly beautiful book full of wonderous stories and illustrations.
