Baines was perhaps the leading topographical artist of the later half of the nineteenth century. He was a vastly experienced African traveller, and one of the earliest to describe the regions of Matabele and Mashonaland. However, very little of his enormous pictorial output was ever published. This image is from the rare handcoloured issue of Baines’s Victoria Falls Zambesie River. Cf, Mendelssohn, p70.
