The author served as a missionary for ten years in Micronesia, and also wrote With South Sea Folk (1898). Born Ella Theodora Crosby, in 1900 she married fellow ABCFM missionary Edwin Munsell Bliss.

Alongside a historical overview of the various Christian missions to the western Pacific region, this book also contains a description of the activities of the island hopping missionary ship the Morning Star, and much discussion of missionary run schools and education programs.
