A significant contribution to the ichthyology of Zanzibar, with six beautifully hand-coloured plates.

The work was a collaboration between the Scottish diplomat Robert Playfair (1828-1899) and the celebrated German-born British zoologist Albert Günther (1830-1914). Günther was a remarkably active taxonomist, describing thousands of reptiles and fish, and authoring (and contributing to) an impressive range of lists and catalogues during his career. This is among the small number of his works to feature hand-coloured illustrations.
