BESTE (Henry Digby).
Four years in France; or, narrative of an English family's residence there during that period; preceded by some account of the conversion of the author to the catholic faith.
The author (1768-1836) who had been brought up an Anglican but who had become a catholic gives an account of a journey to Paris, Avignon, the Pont du Gard, and other places in the south of France. It even shows the English obsession with airing sheets (chapter II “Damp sheets, how aired”), and some awareness of modern literature -Scott’s character Edie Ochiltre (The Antiquary, 1816) is quoted on p. 98. There is also an account of his sending his son Kenelm to Stonyhurst of which some account is given (pp. 272 sqq.)
