FADEN (William jr.).
France, divided into Metropolitan Circles Departments & Districts; as decreed by the National Assembly Jany. 15th. 1790. ...
Scarce map of France, constructed to depict the post-Revolutionary regional divisions of government as established by the (Republican) National Assembly, replacing the old (monarchical) counties.
The British, in the main, followed events in France with trepidation, with the fear that the French would endeavour to export their revolutionary brand of Republicanism across the Channel, so there was considerable interest in maps of France, particularly showing the latest government arrangements.
This example, with its bright original wash colour for the departements, highlights the new divisions. With the onset of war with France, new maps were required, so this map had a short life span, and is relatively scarce.
