Small 4to (174 x 134mm). [4], 67, [1] pp. Title-page spotted and browned with some chipping to the edges, occasional foxing and browning throughout, closely cropped in a couple of places (just touching the sidenotes but not obscuring the meaning), old paper repair to the head of C1 (touching a line of text but not obscuring the meaning on either verso or recto) final leaf a little crumped and dusty on the verso. Late 18th-century polished calf, covers with a gilt border (rebacked with a new spine and label, corners repaired, covers a little rubbed).

STC 23254. Folger only in the USA. First printed in 1610 (Folger and Harvard only) and in 1615 (Huntington only) but the present is greatly expanded with an abstract before the text and a 6pp table of the copyhold tenants of Stepney and Hackney. The last copy of this book recorded at auction on Rare Book Hub is the present copy at Sotheby’s in April 1973 (£38 to Solomon Pottesman).

The rights of tenants in 17th century East London.

Part of an ongoing dispute between Thomas Wentworth, first earl of Strafford and his tenants in Hackney and Stepney (then in the country of Middlesex but today part of Greater (East) London. The manors of Stepney and Hackney had been given to Sir Thomas Wentworth, Baron Wentworth (d.1551) in 1550 by Edward VI. The first part of the books lists the rules and regulations to be followed by those who lived as tenants of the Wentworth estate in London. The second part lists all the residents of the estate in this area.
