The Personal Narrative of Lieut. Hourst of his Exploration of the Niger.Second edition. Folding map & 190 photgraphs. 8vo. Very good in original blue cloth, gilt. 520pp, London, Chapman Hall, 1899.
The aim of the expedition was to pursue French colonial interests along the Niger. Hourst’s team started in Timbuktu and followed the river to the ocean. It was a better organised expedition than most, distinguished by the fact that no lives were lost. By passing himself off as the nephew of Dr. Barth, the great German traveller, Hourst managed to avoid any problems with the locals. The chapter devoted to the Tuaregs is of particular ethnographic note.
