BURN MURDOCH (W.G.).
From Edinburgh to the Antarctic.

William Gordon Burn Murdoch’s account of the Dundee Whaling Expedition, on which he served as assistant to William Speirs Bruce, as well as expedition artist, aboard the ship Balaena. “Murdoch’s narrative covers the voyage south at great length, providing a fascinating picture of shipboard life, together with chanteys and yars in Scottish dialect. […] The Antarctic portion of the narrative contains astute observations of the wildlife and sealing operations. Bruce contributed a chapter summarizing the scientific observations […] farther south his content dissipated as he witnessed the single-mindedness of the sealing operations and the ghastliness of the butchery.” (Rosove).
