First Edition; quarto (251 x 200 mm); vi, (vi), 157, (37)pp index, (1) advertisement page; thirty-three folding copper-engraved maps, edge bound, and folded in. Three maps with margins frayed at the fore-edge, some with marginal ink annotations. Contemporary calf, rebacked, five raised bands and red morocco label with gilt lettering to spine; boards worn but nicely repaired. Some light staining, otherwise very good. Ownership inscription of John Henniker (presumably John Henniker (1724-1803), 1st Baron Henniker), dated Sept. 26th 1767. London : John & Paul Knapton, 1742.

Pierre Nicolas Lenglet du Fresnoy (1674-1755) was a French diplomat, geographer and author who wrote a series of geographical texts for use in schools. This English edition was translated by Philip Morant for the Knaptons.

The book contains a set of maps of the world as known to the ancients, copied from Christoph Cellarius and engraved by Richard William Seale and William Henry Toms. The maps depict Europe, North Africa, the Near and Middle East.
