Harada Toyokichi (1860-1894) lived in Germany from the age of 14. Having studied in Freiburg, Heidelberg and Munich, he returned to Japan in ? to become Professor of Geology at Tokyo Imperial University. Later he became director of the geological bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, and played the key role in developing a geological theory for Japan based on Pumpelly’s Sinian system.
