New woman fiction. Gertrude Dix grew up in Bristol, becoming interested in socialism from an early age. She was a member of the Clifton and Bristol Christian Societies and advocated for workers during the labour unrest in Bristol in 1889–90. She also trained as a nurse and wrote novels focussed around women’s issues. In the 1890s she moved to London and entered into Fabian, Independent Labour Party and Christian Socialist circles. Her later life was spent with her partner, Robert Allan Nicol, and their three children in San Francisco. Inscription on front free endpaper. Corners bumped, wear to head and tailcaps, rubbing along joints. Rear hinge shaken, webbing visible. Top edge trimmed, others untrimmed. Nearly a very good copy.
