FOREIGN OFFICE.

Gold Coast.

Confidential issue. Large folding colour map in rear pocket. 8vo. Publisher’s grey-blue printed stiff wrappers. Some minor toning but a very good copy of an innately fragile publication. iv, 66pp. London, H.M. Stationery Office, January, 1919.

£750.00

A rare and desirable handbook on the Gold Coast, compiled by British officials at the close of the First World War. It is an excellent example of the confidential issue.

In the Spring of 1917 the Foreign Office started work on a series of handbooks for the use of British delegates attending the Peace Conference. Published in 1918 and 1919, the handbooks were only issued to officials and all were marked ‘Confidential’ on the upper wrapper. A public issue of each handbook, often with redacted passages and without maps, was published in 1920.
