£675.00

An unsophisticated copy of an early Baptist Mission Press imprint. This is a simplified Sanscrit grammar for the use of the British in India. “The whole is divided into four parts, Orthography, Etymology, Syntax, and Prosody. This, though a common and conveient division, has not heretofore been applied to Sunscrit [sic].”

Having trained at the Clarendon Press (Oxford) Pearce was well equipped to tackle the printing responsibilities of the mission. Yates was sent to Calcutta by the Baptist Missionary Society, then on to Singapore where he studied Sanscrit and Begali under William Carey. When the Serampore establishment separated from the Baptist Missionary Society in 1817, Yates reamined with the latter, and moved to Calcutta where he established a school and helped found the Calcutta Missionary Union.
