Grand Architectural Panorama Of London Regent Street to Westminster Abbey from original drawings made expressly for the work ...

THE SIGHTS OF LONDON

Wood engraving, 115 x 5760 mm. Restoration of old folds and a little spotting. Folding into the original gilt embossed cloth boards, front board detached. London, I. Whitelaw, 1849.

£800.00

Fascinating street panorama of London, showing the frontage of one side of the streets from Westminster Abbey (at left) to All Soul’s Church, Langham Place, at the upper end of Regent Street. Extending out to about eighteen feet in length, this panorama lets the viewer “take an architectural tour” of the streets of London as they were almost immediately before the Great Exhibition.

It is particularly interesting and useful as a commercial panorama, with each shop front shown with the proprietor’s name. Additionally, some proprietor’s names also appear at the foot the view, perhaps they having paid extra for the privilege. The artist has also included the staffage of the streets he depicted: pedestrians, horses, carts and carriages, street entertainers and even sheep being driven to market.
